On Friday 26 January 2024 at 19:15, the Norwegian national satellite NorSat-TD ignited its engine to ascend to a higher orbit. "This was the very first time a Norwegian national satellite was steered into space to raise its orbit and perform what is known as orbit maintenance," says Tyler Jones, Senior Advisor at the Norwegian Space Centre.

NorSat-TD was launched on 15 April 2023 and entered low Earth orbit at an altitude of approximately 500 kilometres.  However, since NorSat-TD was launched, high solar activity has increased the size of the Earth's atmosphere, adding more drag to any spacecraft in orbit. "As a result, NorSat-TD has lost about 20 kilometres of altitude. It therefore needed to be raised to get back into the right orbit," says Jones.
